HARVEST SOUNDS CONCERT TO BE HELD SUNDAY IN NEW MADISON

Thursday, November 3rd, 2011

NEW MADISON – First Universalist Church of New Madison is proud to announce the HOPE Foundation of Darke County has been chosen to be beneficiary of the church’s 11th annual benefit concert. Harvest Sounds 2011 will be presented on Sunday, Nov. 6 at 3 p.m. at First Universalist Church, located at 331 East Washington St., New Madison.

The HOPE (Helping Other People Excel) Foundation of Darke County is dedicated to improving the quality of life for residents of Darke County by receiving, managing and distributing charitable gifts in the areas of education, the arts, social services, community projects, conservation and animal welfare. All 100 percent of the proceeds from Harvest Sounds will go to the HOPE Foundation to provide grants where the funds will best serve Darke County.

Opening the concert will be “Subject to Change,” featuring Stuart Schlotterbeck, along with good friends Wanda and Dennis Schwallie. The three perform a variety of musical styles and play a number of instruments, including strings, harmonica, drums and recorder. Wanda and Stuart provide the vocals, joined occasionally by Dennis. The popular and in-demand Columbus group will add a special touch to Harvest Sounds.

The First Universalist Trio with flutist Margaret Schryver, pianist Roberta Feltman, and Lloyd Ketring at the organ, will set the stage for the exciting closing performance of the concert. The trio’s three part rendition of “Lord of the Dance” opens the way for the first dancer ever to grace the stage at the church’s annual benefit concert.

Closing the show will be 16-year-old Drew Lovejoy, a world champion of Irish dance, having won the world championship in 2010, is the 2011 first-runner-up, and No. 1 in his age group.

Drew is the youngest North American male to achieve this goal, and the first person of color in the world to win the championship. In July of this year he won the North American National Championship competition held in Nashville, Tenn. He now holds the title of national champion for both 2010 and 2011.

If people like the strumming of guitars, the tickling of the ivories, sacred chords of an organ, the exuberance of Irish dance, lilting melodies played on a flute, vocalists singing favorite tunes, and crisp November days, people will love Harvest Sounds.

Tickets for Harvest Sounds are $8, (free to students through grade 12), and will be available at the HOPE Foundation, from church members, or at the door the day of performance. For information, call 937-548-2480 or go to www.uuchurchnm.org.

DARKE COUNTY CIC BEGINS NEW LOCAL LOAN PROGRAM

Wednesday, August 17th, 2011

Courtesy of a USDA grant, the Darke County Community Improvement Corporation (CIC) has announced the creation of a new low interest revolving loan program for local small business. The program is the first of its kind ever offered by the county CIC and will put over $120,000 of new money into play for local development efforts.  According to CIC President Jim Poeppelman, the program is exactly what the county’s Partnering for Progress campaign (P4P) is all about.

“One of the goals of P4P is to increase the tools available to the local business community, whether it is financial or other,” stated Poeppelman. “This grant obviously fits the bill.  Any chance that we get to leverage state or federal dollars for the good of the local community, we’ll take advantage of”

According to Poeppelman, the Darke County CIC is the stewards of the P4P funding. P4P is a collaborative effort between the county economic development office, the Darke County Community Improvement Corporation (CIC), the county commissioners, and dozens of public and private investors across the county.  It aims to promote both the expansion of existing county industry and the attraction of new business.

The funds will be available for dispersement after Sept 1.  According to Economic Development Director Marc Saluk, the program is far easier to implement then many other low-interest loan programs and enables more local control.  Furthermore, the CIC can apply for additional funds from USDA to refresh the account in future years. Between that and interest payments, Saluk hopes that the loan program will grow much bigger over time.

“Hopefully, this program can help a few businesses complete deals that would not have been able to otherwise occur.  Or, at least, make an existing arrangement less costly,” commented Saluk. “We are fortunate to have this program in place. Similar ones in other Ohio counties have been run with great success.”

Saluk also explained that the CIC’s application received the top score from USDA in the state, with much of the credit going to economic development’s office manager, Melanie Nealeigh.

“That top score is no small thing since that honor carried with it an additional $17,000 from USDA for the loan program.  An extra $17,000 that required no local match, “ Saluk explained.

Saluk said that the CIC already has several companies interested in utilizing the program and is in discussions with them at this time.  The CIC’s executive board will act as the review committee for loan applications though Saluk explained that he is putting in place a committee of bankers that will also make recommendations on the loan applications.

“This is exciting for us.  It’s not a huge sum of money but every little bit helps.  Any programs that we can put into place locally that will increase our independence in development projects from Columbus or D.C. is a good thing,” said Poeppelman.

STATE OF THE HEART EMPLOYEE WINNER IN NATIONAL POETRY CONTEST

Thursday, July 21st, 2011

New Madison resident and State of the Heart Hospice employee Laurie Brumbaugh has won an award in the sixth annual Writer’s Digest Poetry Awards Competition for writers.  Her poem, “Jam,” has been published in the sixth annual Writer’s Digest Poetry Collection.  Brumbaugh is the Marketing Manager for State of the Heart.

Laurie Brumbaugh with Writer's Digest Poetry book

“It is an incredible feeling to be selected,” Brumbaugh said.  “Writer’s Digest is a well-respected publication. After reading the other winning entries, I can tell you this is a high quality collection. Many of the other winners have been successful poets for years, so I feel truly honored that my work is among them.”   Writer’s Digest refers to the winning poems as the “50 winning entries.” For her winning entry, she received a free copy of “Poet’s Market 2011” and $50 worth of books from Writer’s Digest. The collection of poems will be available for purchase at www.writersdigest.com/shop.

Brumbaugh, who graduated from Bowling Green State University with a B.A. in English with a creative writing minor, said, “Since I was 12 years old I have enjoyed writing poetry.  I studied poetry in college and really developed my unique voice there. One of my life’s goals is to become a successful, published author. I would like to publish at least one poetry collection as well as novels.”

Of her winning poem, she said, “The inspiration for ‘Jam’ came from a frustrating experience I had last summer trying to harvest overgrown, overripe strawberries. It made me miss my late mother-in-law a great deal.  It was one of those moments that hits you out of nowhere and makes you feel the loss of that person in your life.  I have always turned to writing as a way of expressing grief, though it doesn’t always turn into a polished piece like this.” She added, “Inspiration can come from anywhere. I am often inspired by nature and I write a great deal from my own experiences. I also get inspired by literature and historical events.” The entry was her first in the contest.

Brumbaugh has been an employee of State of the Heart for a year. The local non-profit agency, with offices in Greenville, Coldwater and Portland, cares for patients in eastern Indiana and western Ohio who are confronting a life limiting illness. Visit the agency web site at www.stateoftheheartcare.org.

NEW MADISON COMMUNITY SUPPER TO BENEFIT OHIO SPECIAL OLYMPICS

Monday, May 2nd, 2011

NEW MADISON – A community supper benefiting the Ohio Special Olympics will be held at the Ft. Black Masonic Lodge, New Madison, on May 10. Serving will be from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in the lodge dining room. Profits are going to the 2011 Ohio Special Olympics charity for this summer’s games which will take place June 24 at the Jesse Owens Sports Complex.

At one time, it required $30 to “sponsor an athlete” to the Summer Games in Columbus. Now, it costs over $150 to bring each athlete to the Games. In 2010, the Ohio Masonic fraternity was able to contribute $200,000 from  352 lodges.

Over the past 23 years, the Masonic Fraternity in Ohio has contributed nearly $2.5 million to support the annual Summer Games of the Special Olympics.

In addition to the financial support, Ohio Masons host a welcome center for the Special Olympics athletes and families, provide volunteer help during the competitions and participate in the Parade of Athletes during the opening ceremonies.

The Ft. Black Lodge is proud to help support the Ohio Special Olympics. Join with us in again making this year’s event successful for Ohio’s Special Olympics athletes.

Mr. Burson, Mr. Thomas, Mrs. Puckett, Mrs. Black met with Mr. Bill LaFramboise, Cory Hathaway, and Teresa Amburgey from GTI to develop a pre-engineering internship.  All students in pre-engineering next year will takea tour of the plant.  Interviews are planned for the students interested in the internship.  Mr. Burson thanked Mrs. Puckett and Mr. Thomas for getting our foot in the door with GTI.  Both Tri-Village Schools and GTI are excited about this future endeavor.

Peer visits were held again on April 12 and the last round of peer visits for the school year will take place in May.  The teachers are getting ideas on how to differentiate instructionto insure all students are growing academically.

The dinner theatre was again a huge success.  Mr. Burson stated he was “truly impressed by the entire program”.  Congratulations to Mrs. Kristen Verhoff, her students, and all the volunteers who createda wonderful program.

The junior and senior prom took place on April 2nd in Richmond at the Elks.  MAP testing will take place the week of May 2nd.  The band and chorus department will be performing in Nashville, TN from May 5th to May 8th.  The Tri-Village Alumni Banquet will be on May 21, 2011 in the Commons.  High School awards will take place on May 17that 9:00 am in the Auditorium.  Graduation is June 4, at 6:00 p.m. in the High School Gymnasium.

Mr. Tony Thomas, Superintendent reported that he will attend a meeting with DP&L to receive better rates through the educational purchasing council.  This is good news for schools to help cut electric rates.

Mr. Thomas reported on Project MORE.  Project MORE, is a mentoring system in Ohio for Reading Excellence.  This program is extensive with a limited number of kidsinvolved.  We have received rave reviews from students and staff.  Mr. Thomas informed the board that he is currently working on the Race to the Top grant along with several staff members.  He is working on recommendations with ODE and the transformation team, and working on the GAP analysis.  Mr. Thomas has spent quality time exploring costs of upgrades to IT infrastructure and the cost associated with purchasing or leasing laptops.  Mr. Thomas briefed board members about the OHSAA proposals; Mr. Thomas and Mr. Brad Gray, Athletic Director recently attending a meeting on the proposed changes to the bylaws.

Mr. Thomas discussed how the extended days were going.  It is great to get the extended days in before the Ohio Achievement Testing begins.

The School Employees Health Care Board is requiring all schools to complete a survey they administer.  It is a tool to determine if schools are in health care pools, have wellness policies, health screenings, and disease management programs.  Tri-Village participates in all of these through our Educational Purchasing Council (EPC).  The EPC has been on top of it and they are guiding usin the right direction.
Mr. Hollinger, Transportation Supervisor reported to Mr. Thomas that the State highway Patrol inspection went well.  All our buses passed inspection.  We had two minor repairs; Mr. Hollinger fixed them right away.  Mr. Bruce Mikesell will begin training Mr. Chris Pearson to be a licensed purchaser of weed control and fertilizer.  This will save the district several dollars.  He will be trained and licensed in a year.

Mr. Thomas would like to thank Mr. Jason Laux and Mr. Bert Hiatt for volunteering their time and equipment to move a building to the ball diamonds.  This will allow the athletic boosters the opportunity to serve concessions to patrons during the games.

TRI-VILLAGE HOLDS MARCH BOE MEETING

Tuesday, April 5th, 2011

The Tri-Village Board of Education met on Monday, March 21, 2011 at 7:00 in the board office. The board heard concerns from Patty Jackson.

Mr. Josh Sagester, Elementary Principal announced the elementary staff will launch Ohio Achievement Assessments (OAA) improvement initiatives.  The initiatives are to encourage, promote and advocate putting forth maximum efforts on the OAA tests approaching in April.  Staff members arebrainstorming ideas to help motivate students in their endeavors.    The OAA testing dates are as follows:  Reading will take place April 28th for grades 3 through 6; Math May 3rd grades 3 through 6; and Science May 5th for 5th graders.

Mr. Sagester is proud to report that to date we have had a total of 55 father figures participate in the Watch Dogs (Dads of Great Students) program as of March 11th.  The grand total for the year is expected to include 90 father figures participating for at least one day during the school year.  This is a great program for dads to get involved with their child hereat the school.

The Darke County Arts in Education presented Leland Faulkner who combined magic with performance art to create a very unique presentation.  He is a master of light and shadows; he used only his hands and a few simple props to create an endless number of characters.  He presented his art to students in grades 4 through 6.  Students learned the importance of using their imagination and that possibilities are limitless.
Mr. Sagester was proud to report students in grades kindergarten through sixth raised a grand total of $3,300 for the fight against heart disease.  Mr. Zachary Graham, Elementary Gym Teachers organized this great event.  Thursday, April 14th from 6:00–7:30 there will be a math night for students in grades K-6.  Students will leave with several math games to play at home with their family, and learn how to use inexpensive, everyday items to enhance math skills.  This will provide an opportunity for families to enjoy themselves while learning how to reinforce/learn math skills.  “We are continuing to educate our community regarding vital math skills and promote our OAA Math assessments coming in May”, commented Mr. Sagester.
Mr. Sagester introduced Project MORE to the board members.  Project MORE, is a mentoring system in Ohio for Reading Excellence.  It is a scientifically based reading research volunteer reading mentoring project for students with disabilities that have demonstrated statistically significant reading results since 1999.  Independent research findings consistently report students with specified learning disabilities make month to month reading gains when they are involved in 1:1 reading mentored four times per week for 30 minutes.  Mrs. Carr’s elementary tutor class will implement Project MORE.  Project MORE will partner with the high school cadet program.

Mr. Bryian Burson, JH/HS Principal proudly reported that all students who were required to take the Ohio Graduation Test (OGT) were present the entire week.  He would like to thank the entire staff for all their extra efforts during OGT week.  The freshman class completed a science enrichment project with rockets while the sophomores were taking tests.  On Thursday, March 17th, the class launched all 13 rockets, and they were all successful.

OAA for reading will be on April 26th, Math April 29th, and Science May 4th.
Congratulations to the choir and band for receiving an excellent rating at their state competition.  Mr. Burson commended Mr. Brough, Mrs. Verhoff and all students involved for all their extra efforts.  The Tri-Village Music Department is proud to announce that this year we will be presenting our 4th annual Dinner Theater. This year’s production is entitled “A Night at the Opry”.  It will feature music, both past and present, from the genre of Country Western. There will be performances from soloists, a variety of ensembles, Tri-Village “First Edition,” Tri-Village Junior High Chorus, and the Tri-Village High School Chorus. Show times are Saturday April 2, 2011 at 6:30 and Sunday April 3, 2011 at 4:00 in the HS Auditorium. Tickets are $16.00. Tanny Clark and Delight Catering are once again preparing the meal. Meal tickets can be purchased beginning March 7, 2011 in the chorus room after school until 4:00 p.m. We will also sell stadium seats this year that include a complimentary bottle of water, no meal, for $5.00. These can be bought pre-sale or at the door. Proceeds from the show are used to help our chorus and band compete nationally every 3 years.

The winter sports season came to an end as the winter sports banquet was held on March 22nd.  Congratulations to all winter athletes on your accomplishments.  The Varsity Girls Basketball team finished 24-2, Regional Runner-ups, District Champs, and CCC Champs.  Congratulations to Coach Gray and his entire team.
Mr. Tony Thomas, Superintendent announced that the STEM Lab in the morning will begin ACT prep work training.  Thanks to the STEM teachers for suggesting this great idea.  Mr. Thomas stated that he will keep the board updated on the latest budget and legislative issues as the state government works onthe budget.
This year seniors who donated blood 3 times for any blood drive will wear a red cord for graduation.  This will be sponsored by either the senior class or service learning project.  Anything we can do to support this organization is wonderful.
Mr. Thomas, Mr. Sagester, Mr. Burson, Mrs. Barnes, and Mrs. Miller will attend a Race to the Top (RttT) working session on May 3rd to make sure theScope of Work document submitted to the Ohio Department of Education is in line.    The same group is also working on a GAP analysis to compare the current teacher evaluation system to the model developed by the Department of Education.
Mr. Thomas asked for Board approval to begin writing a grant to incorporate a New Tech Model classroom as part of the high school class offerings.  This is a one million dollar RttT grant, and Mr. Thomas believes it is well worth our time to look into it.  Only four schools in Ohio will receive the grant.  There are 62 schools to model after, mainly in Indiana.  If awarded the grant, next year is a pre-launch year for the New Tech Model.  This would not affect our current electives.  Students in grades 9 through 12 will be involved in The New Tech Model for part of the day.  Every student involved would either have an iPad, computer, e-reader or some style of one-to-one technology device chosen by the district.  This is very much project based and would include integrated classrooms and team teaching.  Digital learning is where society is headed and for Tri-Village to receive an opportunity to have the initiative funded is a great opportunity.

The school district will enter into another five year lease contract with Prosource in April.  The district has received several bids on a new digital front lawn sign.  The sign would fit in the existing cabinet.  It is 18” x 7.’  Donations from the community are helping to defer the cost of the sign.

Tri-Village Local Schools is blessed to have a beautiful building and wonderfully landscaped grounds.  The number of landscaping beds may surprise citizens. There are 19 flower beds on school grounds.  While they are beautiful it is also takes work to maintain them.  We would like to offer families, groups, and organizations the opportunity to adopt a flower bed to help us have an attractive place to welcome visitors and make our students feel special.  We will post a sign to give credit to the family or organization who agrees to care for the flower bed.  If you would like to get involved please contact Shellie Francis at 996-1511.  We are happy to have Britton Filbrun from Outdoor Accents who will donate a day to the memorial garden for his labor and expertise in the area of landscaping.

BOX CITY PLANNED IN GREENVILLE APRIL 2

Thursday, March 24th, 2011

GREENVILLE – Box City is a service project developed by The Key Clubs of Ohio District 3 to raise awareness of homelessness in our area. Box City is a fun-filled overnight where participants will exchange items like canned goods, clothing, coats, hats and gloves for cardboard boxes and other materials from the Hobo Depot to build their houses that they will spend a night in.

During this overnight, apart from the cardboard homes, participants will be split into hobo tribes. These tribes will compete against other tribes throughout the night in Olympic style, hobo-themed, games for points. In the morning, the best hobo tribe will be crowned the Hobo Alpha Commune.

Throughout the night, the participants will also enjoy a barbecue, a few movies, and other games apart from the hobo Olympics. This year’s Box City will be held on the front yard of Greenville High School, located at 100 Green Wave Way. If the weather is too cold or rainy, it will take place in the main gym of Greenville High School.

Box City begins with registration at 5 p.m. on April 2 and ends at 9 a.m. April 3. Box City is for students in grades 9-12, from any school, and it’s free for all participants. The only thing needed will be items to exchange at the Hobo Depot for building materials. We will then take all the donated items and give them to the local homeless shelters.

However, with the cost of drinks, food, and materials such as duct tape, we are in need of some donations to help keep Box City a fun eye-opening project to show homelessness in our area. If any area businesses or individuals would like to help contribute to Box City’s cause, all donations to the Greenville Key Club would be appreciated. Checks may be sent to Key Club at 100 Green Wave Way or by dropping the check off or calling the high school at 548-4188 to have a Key Club Member pick up the donation.

Each company or name will be mentioned in a follow-up press release for gracious help, unless people wish to remain anonymous. Any extra money left after purchasing the food, drinks and other small items will be given to the homeless shelters to use.

Join us for Box City 2011 at the front of the Greenville High School on April 2 between 5 and 6 p.m. for a night of fun and games while we raise awareness of homelessness in our area. Anyone in high school in any school, in any county, in any state, is welcome to join us!

Box City was developed by the Key Clubs in Greenville, Piqua, Troy, Covington, and Tri-Village, and we hope to see as many participants as possible! If students are interested in attending Box City, an information packet is available in the main offices in many high schools. The packet contains what to bring, the schedule, FAQ, rules, the exchange list for the Hobo Depot, and most important: a medical form, which must be turned into registration on April 2 to attend. If a student’s school does not have the packet, the mandatory medical form will be available at the registration table on April 2, but a parent signature will be needed. Come and experience a night homeless; living in a cardboard box as students compete in their hobo tribes while raising awareness and helping homeless shelters.
